Taunton Vegetable Championship Classes

These classes will be judged for quality, variety and a high standard of visual presentation. Accessories, staging, backboards and foliage (such as parsley etc) may be used arranged for best presentational effect.

Root Vegetable Classes

Root vegetables should be carefully washed. Stalks and leaves neatly trimmed to about 75mm and tied. Vegetables should be blemish free, evenly matched and evenly coloured. Display directly on the showbench, Plates are not needed. Carrots should be laid side-by-side in a triangular formation with the root facing front. All cultivars should be named where possible.

Onions, Shallots and Leeks

Leeks should be thoroughly washed with the soil teased from the roots which should not be cut off. The leaves should not be cut and should be in good condition and tied in two or three places along their length. Onions and shallots should have the roots neatly trimmed and the neck tied. Flaking skin should be removed, but be careful not to over-peel. You should exhibit large firm, well-ripened specimens. Onions and shallots should have thin necks and unbroken skin, free from damage and disease. Onions are normally staged on rings or soft collars to keep them upright. Shallots can be shown sitting in a dish of sand. All cultivars should be named where possible.

Peas and Beans

You should exhibit large, long, fresh, smooth pods of good colour well filled with tender peas or beans. Runner and French beans should have no outward signs of seeds. Exhibits should be well-matched and shown on a plate or board with a short portion of stalk retained. Cultivars should be named where possible.

Saladines

Saladines are vegetables normally eaten raw or cooked and eaten cold. They should be fresh, clean and evenly matched. Lettuce are normally shown with the roots left on and neatly enclosed in a plastic bag to retain freshness. Display garlic the same way as onions. Radishes are shown as a tied bunch complete with foliage. Cucumbers should be of a good, fresh green colour with a short stalk. Cultivars should be named where possible.

Cabbages, Courgettes, Cauliflowers and Herbs

Cabbages and cauliflowers should have solid heads of equal size with approx 75mm of stem. Remove a minimum of outer leaves. Courgettes: select uniform, slim, young, tender specimens which can be staged on plates with or without flowers. Marrows and squashes should be matching, tender and young. Wipe clean and exhibit directly on the showbench. Spinach beet should have large, fresh. thick and undamaged, well coloured leaves and stalks displayed in a vase. Cultivars should be named where possible.
