Bees and Honey

(not less than 5.5 kg or more than 11 kg of honey), can also include wax, mead, pollen and comb honey. All to be staged in the most attractive form on a ground space not exceeding 120 cms x 120 cms.

Display (as if for sale) of honey and hive products (honey, cut comb, candles, wax, wax models, chunk honey, sections, frames of honey and pollen). Any shape or type of container with exhibitor’s own labels, as for shop sale, space not to exceed 60cm x 60cm (to be judged equally for quality and sales appeal). Honey weight not less than 3 kg or more than 5.5 kg. See Reg 22.

Will be judged on Educational Merit, and hive must be fitted with channel to enable bees to fly.
Polycarbonate or polypropylene safety glass to be fitted. See Reg 26.

An empty beehive to be displayed in an attractive space not to exceed 4ft x 4ft. Can incorporate
flowers and plants to enhance. Hive must be a functioning beehive and weatherproof.

Made by or designed by the exhibitor. A brief description is to be supplied (dimensions to be stated on the entry form).

Such as furniture creams and polishes, honey preserves and conserves, cosmetics, mustards and pickles, sweets, wax wraps, etc. Excluding jars of honey. All items are to be labelled for information, but without any identifying marks or hazard labels (polish and cream). Decorative material may be used (space not to exceed 60cm x 60cm). To be judged for content and artistry.

A viable colony with 5 or 6 frames in a nucleus hive suitable for sale or purchase. With any movable
frame size, with a marked queen, bees on ALL frames, brood at all stages of development on a
minimum of 3 frames and 2 frames equivalent of stores. See Reg 26.

Plastic, glass, metal or ceramic container, well filled, no hazard label or identifying (producer’s) label.

Moulded beeswax item (not a candle). Any size. To be judged equally on wax quality, complexity and
appeal. Colouring not permitted.

Display of three to six beeswax items on a base (base not to be judged; items not to be candles). To
be judged equally on wax quality, complexity and appeal. Items do not need to match. Max size of
display 300 mm x 300 mm. Colouring not permitted.

To be displayed erect in appropriate size holder, made by casting in a mould, one to be lit by the judge. See Reg 21.

Recipe: 150 g butter; 100 g light soft brown sugar; 175 g clear honey; 15 ml water; 200 g self-raising
flour; 2 eggs (Size 2).
Method: Grease and line a round cake tin 15-20 cm diameter (6-8 inch). Place sugar, butter, honey
and water in a pan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Sift the flour over the
surface and stir in. Beat well with a wooden spoon to remove lumps. Beat the eggs lightly then add to
mixture distributing evenly. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin. Bake for 50 minutes at 180°C
(350°F, Gas mark 4). Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes and then turn onto a wire rack to cool.
Cooking time and temperature may vary to suit the type of oven used so have a trial run before the
competition day. To be displayed on a plain white paper plate, with doily and in a clear polythene
bag. Cakes to be cut during judging. Reg 25.

Recipe: 175 g plain flour; 100 g butter; 100 g soft brown sugar; 15 ml clear honey; 5 ml bicarb of soda; 2.5 ml ground ginger; 2.5 ml ground cinnamon; 2.5 ml mixed spice
Method: Line 2 baking trays with parchment. Heat the oven to 180°C. Melt the butter, sugar and honey in a pan over a low heat. Add the remaining ingredients and beat until well blended. Place spoonfuls of mixture well apart on the baking sheets. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until golden brown and the tops are cracked. Leave to cool on the baking sheets for 1 minute, then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling. This amount should make 12 fairings. Reg 25.

One ingredient or topping to be honey. Recipe of your own choice - a copy to be displayed with cakes.
No cream or cream cheese to be included in recipe. Reg 25.

Must be made from the exhibitors own recipe. A copy of the recipe must be displayed with the
exhibit. Reg 25.

To depict a subject connected with beekeeping, overall size - A4, including mount. Entry label to be adhered to the front bottom right corner. Photograph to have been taken by the exhibitor.

Colour or black and white pertaining to beekeeping. Overall size - A3, including mount. Entry label to be adhered to the front bottom right corner. Photographs to have been
taken by the exhibitor.

Design and produce a label to fit a 454 g jar, to comply with all current legislation including producers
name etc. Can be displayed either on an empty jar or a mount not to exceed 18cm x 18cm.

One piece of wrap will be used to wrap a food item which will be supplied by the Show. Only beeswax
to be used.

Relating to Bees or Beekeeping. The required display area not to exceed 600mm x 600mm. Must be
delivered by Wednesday evening.

May include lace, embroidery, knitting and crochet relating to Bees or Beekeeping. Display area not
to exceed 600mm x 600mm. Must be delivered by Wednesday evening.
