SPECIAL CONDITIONS:- Boundaries – The former County of Westmorland and such parts of adjoining counties as are within a 55-mile radius of the Showground.
Judging – will take place in the three weeks prior to Show Day, to be completed by the evening of Sunday 8 September.
Rules 24, 25 & 26 – Exhibitors’ attention is specially drawn to the terms and conditions expressed in the rules of the Society. (Details at the end of this Schedule).
Exhibitors are requested to house their livestock as adjacent to the farmstead as possible to assist the judges.
Farms

Class: FS1 Best Managed Farm

Description:

The judge will take into consideration the efficiency of the farming system appropriate to the farm’s size, type and location. They will evaluate the layout, design and use of the buildings and the quality of the stock, crops and grassland.

Class: FS2 Environmental

Description:

Working farmers and landowners who have undertaken a project and done the most to further environmental sustainability and protection and the ideals of conservation in keeping with local conditions and the environment.

Stocks

Note re Classes 3 – 7 - The stock classes are designed to encourage good husbandry. Therefore the judge will be asked to take into account the management, marketing, general husbandry and conformation of the herd. All cattle in the respective classes must be shown, other stock at the judge’s discretion.

Description:

General stock which shall include Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Pigs etc, according to the extent and quality of the farm.

Class: FS4 Dairy Herd

Description:

Dairy herd of any size in the Society’s area, to include all cattle which have produced a calf.

Class: FS5 Pedigree Beef Suckler Herd

Description:

Pedigree beef suckler herd in the Society’s area, all pedigree stock to be included. The judge will take into consideration the economic performance of the herd.

Description:

Commercial beef suckler herd in the Society’s area, all commercial stock to be included. The judge will take into consideration the economic performance of the herd.

Class: FS7 Young Cattleworker on Farm

Description:

Open to young people aged 30 years and under judged on farm during August. The class is aimed at youngsters with ambition, initiative and industry knowledge. The exhibitor must be actively involved in cattle related farming (dairy or beef) and demonstrate to the judge, in practise and/or during discussion, animal husbandry, breeding, commercial awareness etc.
Allocation of marks:
- presentation of the herd
- management and understanding of cattle farming
- marketing, commercial awareness
- breeding policy, animal husbandry

Description:

Sheep flock (lowland breeds - pure) – The judge will take into account the extent and quality of the farm. 100% of the stock must be available for judging, which will take place during July.

Class: FS11 Sheep Flock (rare & minority breeds)

Description:

Sheep Flock (rare & minority breeds) – the judge will take into account the extent and quality of the farm. Flock to consist of minimum 10 sheep of the same breed. Judging will take place in November.
Results will be published following judging with prizes presented at the 2026 Show. Entries close Thursday 22 October.

Class: FS12 Young Shepherd on Farm

Description:

Open to young people aged 30 years and under judged on farm during August/September. The class is aimed at youngsters with ambition, initiative and industry knowledge. The exhibitor must own and manage his/her own sheep (minimum 10 sheep) and demonstrate to the judge, in practise and/or during discussion, management, breeding, marketing etc.
Allocation of marks:
40% presentation of the flock
20% management and understanding of sheep farming
20% marketing, commercial awareness
20% breeding policy
