1 The silage competition is for the benefit of farmers in the Westmorland County area and is divided into 6 categories: dairy silage, beef silage, maize silage, whole crop, big bale and hay (unwrapped). The entry fee is £15.00 per category with only one entry allowed in each category per business. Entries close Monday 5th January 2026.

2 The competition is open to an area governed by one of the following:

(a) The Society’s District i.e. the former county of Westmorland and those parts of adjoining Counties which are within a fifty five mile radius of Lane Farm, Crooklands
(b) Members of the Westmorland County Agricultural Society

3 The competition is judged in two sections, one for analytical/nutrient content and the other on visual assessment. The marks in each category will be set by Westmorland County Agricultural Society, assisted by Dugdale Nutrition, 60% being awarded to the analysis & 40% to the visual inspection.

4 One face sample will be taken from the clamp and/or bale. The samples will be taken by Dugdale Nutrition and then analysed using the latest methods of testing. Clamp silage may only be entered in one class i.e. dairy or beef.

5 The sampling for analytical purposes will take place from December 2025 to January 2026 and the shortlist of finalists (minimum of three per section) will be notified on or before Friday 23rd January 2026. The visual assessment and judging for the short-listed entries in each section will be on Monday 26th January 2026. Results will be announced at the Silage Supper on Wednesday 28th January 2026.
