Ridden Side Saddle

This is an informal, fun, show where help and advice will be given. Habits need not be worn in classes 1 and 2, but smart competition dress code should be used where habits are not worn. Horses/ponies may be shared in classes 1 & 2. All classes are open to all, you do not need to be a member. Safety hats to current safety standards as defined in Rules 11 and 12 below must be worn whilst mounted by all Junior competitors at all times and by any Adult competitor in Classes 1 & 2. For all other classes see Rule 12 (Adults) below.
Ring One
Mrs Louise Graham (Judge)
Class: 1, Novice Walk & Trot

Description:

Aimed at absolute novice riders, lead rein riders, and/or horses new to side saddle. Honesty is
appreciated in the spirit of a novice show. Riders may choose to show canter in their individual
show but it is not required. Habits need not be worn and horses may be shared

Class: 2, Novice Equitation Class

Description:

Open to Adult and Junior riders who have never competed in a Side Saddle Equitation Qualifying
Class. A short simple show will be required. Habits need not be worn, and horses may be shared
(Qualifying Points for Equitation Championship classes at the National Show are not awarded in
this class)

Class: 3, The Side Saddle Association EQUITATION CHAMPIONSHIPS ADULT QUALIFYING CLASS

Description:

Run under SSA rules defined in the current Members’ Handbook. Open to SSA Adult Members
and NonMembers aged 18 or over on 1st January of the current year. Members carrying their
current Championship Points Cards are eligible for SSA rosettes to 3rd place and SSA
Championship Points. A rosette in memory of The Late Mr R Philpot is offered to the Adult Member,
judged to be the best turned out.

Class: 4, The Side Saddle Association EQUITATION CHAMPIONSHIPS JUNIOR QUALIFYING CLASS

Description:

Run under SSA rules defined in the current Members’ Handbook. Open to
SSA Junior Members and NonMembers aged under 18 on 1st January of the current year.
Members carrying their current Championship Points Cards are eligible for SSA rosettes to 3rd
place and SSA Championship Points. Southernden Farm offers a rosette to the highest placed
Member aged under 14 on 1st January of the current year. Manor Grange Stud Show Centre offer
a rosette to the Junior Member, judged to be the best turned out.

Class: 5, BEST HORSE OR PONY RIDDEN SIDE SADDLE

Description:

Open to horses and ponies 4 years old or over: conformation & manners will be taken into
consideration; horses/ponies will not be stripped. A Special rosette will be awarded to the highest
placed Adult and Junior Members of the SSA carrying their current Championship Points Cards.
The Highest placed coloured exhibit ridden by a competitor aged 16yrs or over (who has not
already qualified) receives a Special Rosette and qualifies for the Side Saddle Final at the CHAPS
Championship Show. Open to any type of exhibit. Riders/Owners need not be a member or their
exhibit registered with CHAPS at the time of qualification, but in order to compete at the
Championships, the Rider/Owner must be a showing member and their horse/pony registered with
CHAPS before entering the final. Lead Rein competitors are eligible for this class. Leaders must
be correctly dressed.

Class: 6, SIDE SADDLE CONCOURS d’ÉLÉGANCE

Description:

The sole criterion for this class is the elegance of the picture presented by horse and rider. Attention
may be paid to the rider’s personal appearance, but detailed inspection of rider or tack is not
required. Fancy dress or period costume is not permitted. Competitors are required to walk, trot
and canter. No individual show is required, but the Judge may ask groups of 3 or 4 riders to give
short displays. A Special rosette will be awarded to the highest placed Adult and Junior Members
of the SSA carrying their current Championship Points Cards. N.B. Silk hats are permitted to be
worn by Adults IN THIS CLASS AT ANY TIME OF DAY. Juniors must wear hats to current Safety
standards or above for this class. Adult riders not wearing such hats do so at their own risk.

Class: 7, SADDLE COSTUME CONCOURS d’ÉLÉGANCE

Description:

The sole criterion for this class is the elegance of the picture presented by horse/pony and rider,
and the way of going of the horse/pony. Safe tack must be used. Detailed inspection of the rider’s
period costume is not required. Fancy dress is not permitted. Competitors are required to walk, trot
and canter. No individual show is required, but the judge may ask small groups of 3 or 4 riders to
give short displays. A Special rosette will be awarded to the highest placed Adult and Junior
Members of the SSA carrying their current Championship Points Card. Competitors should
produce a brief résumé about their costumes for the Commentator. Juniors must wear hats to
current Safety Standard or above for this class. Adult riders not wearing such hats do so at their
own risk.

Concours d’Elegance

First, second and third placed horses/ponies not already qualified in eligible classes will qualify for the Champion of Britain Title class to be held at Arena UK, Grantham on Sunday 5th September 2021. If a horse/pony has already qualified, cards may be handed down to 6th place at judge’s discretion. Each qualified horse/pony will receive a qualification card in the ring which will enable the owner to enter the Championship Show, provided the owner and rider/handler are, or become registered with the Concours d’Elegance Society within 21 days of the qualifying show. Description:

Open to astride riders only. Costumes can be professionally or home-made. A resume detailing
your costume is appreciated but not mandatory.

Description:

Primarily home-made costume although ready-made jackets may be worn and embellished. A
